corneal transplant

The cornea is the clear covering over the front of the eye. It is the main focusing element of the eye. Vision is dramatically reduced if the cornea becomes cloudy from disease, injury, or infection. During a corneal transplant, a disc-shaped segment of the defective cornea is replaced by a piece of healthy donor tissue provided by the eye bank. Nearly 10% of all blinding eye disease may be cured with a corneal transplant.
